The Basics

Zacharias is the Greek form of "Zechariah": From the Hebrew name זְכַרְיָה (Zekaryah) which meant "YAHWEH remembers". Zechariah was a minor prophet of the Old Testament, author of the Book of Zechariah. This is also the name of the father of John the Baptist in the New Testament, who was temporarily made dumb because of his disbelief. -- from behindthename.com

Political View: Hufflepuffs are loyal creatures, aren't they? Well, the only being he's loyal to is to himself... and his older sister. All right, so that's two beings. Zacharias is -- was rather peeved by Voldemort and the Pureblood Supremists a.k.a. the Dark Lord's sheep, but he didn't do much to support the Order, either. He joined Dumbledore's Army because he couldn't tolerate Umbridge's incompetence. All in all, Zacharias is neutral.

Appearance

Height: 5'11 ½"
Weight: 150 lbs.
Eyes: Cloudy Blue
Hair: Straw-coloured, light blonde.
Build: Tall and skinny. Thanks to Quidditch (from his days at Hogwarts), a healthy diet, and occasional exercises, his body is nicely toned. He is more lean than being "beefy", though.
Dress Style: Casual and classy; Zacharias likes both Muggle and Wizarding attire, but he'll mostly be seen with Muggle clothes on. People have assumed he is metrosexual, and they're partially right -- he just likes to have a clean appearance when in public.

Defining Marks: Aside from the information give above, his complexion is moderate (neither pale nor tan), with a few birthmarks or "beauty" marks here and there. Nothing special, other than having an ear piercing on his left lobe, which he got not too long after the War ended. There is an upturn of his nose, along with a well defined jaw and nice lips. His father's physical traits are more prominent in him, but probably not as haughty looking.

Personality

Zacharias may seem like a complex person, but he isn't so hard to understand once someone gets to know him -- which he ~~tries to prevent~~ prevents. He is picky with whom he'll "befriend", and so far he has only had mere acquaintances with the exception of Jemima and Achaius. One can see quite clearly that he's different than the other Hufflepuffs. While most are loyal to allegiances and friends, as well as being open to others, Zacharias is aloof: he directs his loyalty to himself (and to his sister). It's another way of saying he's selfish. Zacharias does have the Hufflepuff quality of being hardworking, however. Perhaps the traits that differentiate him from Slytherins, is that he (probably) isn't as ambitious and that he doesn't manipulate people. He seems to be better at striking a nerve, though.

Though he's a practical individual, Zacharias isn't down-to-earth a hundred percent of the time. He would lose himself in a daydream when he isn't in the mood to deal with reality. His imagination can be vivid, and his passion for whatever he is passionate for is existent, but he doesn't always express it with others. Zacharias is a seeker of knowledge when it comes to terms with Muggles. He wants to banish whatever ignorance he has towards non-magical folk, and is drawn toward their modern ways. Their science fiction is especially intriguing. When it comes to have a sense of humor.. well, it doesn't take much for the world and its people to "amuse" him.

As Zacharias may find himself detached and alienated from others, he can sometimes be superficial. The consideration of other's feelings mostly result in apathy (but he is not devoid of emotion). When he says something with the intention of offending, he doesn't consider the consequences, simply because he doesn't care. There are times when he has authority issues, because he would have problems following others, especially out of impatience or if he has a problem with their expectations and the like. However, if he is challenged to a "fight" that involves physical harm, Zacharias will back down. Usually such challenges are stimulated by the arguments he gets himself into, and he soon realizes it isn't worth his time.

As mentioned, Zacharias has a strong imagination, and an outlet for that would be through art. He especially has a fondness for surrealism and artistic nudity*. He holds no interest in learning about other artists, especially if they're of the wizarding world, but he will buy their art if he likes it. He'll only buy art that is inanimate, because he doesn't like paintings that would talk back to him. He finds the idea of arguing with paintings unpleasant. Zacharias also likes fish -- pet fish. His favorite kind of fish are the pretty tropical ones, which remind of the ocean that symbolizes the unknown.

Psychology

Extrovert/Introvert: Introverted, but not timid. Zacharias prefers to keep to himself, quietly gathering information from his surroundings. He'll say what he has to say, when he needs/wants to say it -- he has been known to blurt out offensive statements. He usually ignores other people's opinions unless it catches his interest, or when something bugs him (especially when he becomes impatient). However, he appears to be critical of society (and towards Gryffindors, especially when he commentated one Quidditch [Gryffindor vs Slytherin] match during his 5th year).
Boggart Would Be: His beloved sister transformed into an Inferi. Jemima is the only person whom he deeply confides in, and it's always a nightmare to see her in such a gruesome condition. It is his worst fear, and even Zacharias has great difficulty dealing with the boggart because he can't possibly think of something "ridiculous" to banish it away.
Patronus Would Be: Despite his imperturbable nature, Zacharias does have enough "happy" memories (mainly involving his sister) to produce a Patronus. It forms into the shape of a lizard: its sun-seeking habit symbolizes the soul's search for awareness, as well as conservation, hidden defense, self-protection, and vision.

Sexuality

Bisexual.
Mr. Smith wants his one and only son to marry, eventually, and pass on the family name to his children. He expects him to find a suitable Pureblood female, of course. Zacharias, on the other hand, couldn't care less, especially about having such a common and dull surname. He has dated several girls -- three, to be exact -- while attending Hogwarts. His short-lived relationships have a few things in common: attraction was mainly based upon physical appearance, his girlfriends weren't much of a challenge (save for keeping up with their wants and needs), and he ended them in annoyance.

Zacharias was once strictly heterosexual, but he gradually turned bi-curious with how his relationships resulted. His sexual modification was also encouraged thanks to the Bat Bogey Incident (after provoking Ginevra Weasley). Despite being indifferent and unaffected by most things, he was deeply humiliated, and decided to "stay away" from girls for a period of time. However, he soon realized that it was girls like Ginny that he liked -- girls who know great self defense and those who aren't so dependent. What Zacharias also likes is physical pleasure, and he began to believe it can be achieved from both sexes.

Lifestyle

Occupation: Ministry of Magic - Department of Magical Law Enforcement - Misuse of Muggle Artifacts Office; Yes, the ~~tiny, little~~ Office which Arthur Weasley once worked under. He works with the old warlock, Perkins.
Residence: Like his sister, Zacharias was born in Scotland, but was raised in England (East Sussex). When the Hufflepuff was withdrawn from Hogwarts, the Smiths settled in their mansion in Melrose, Scotland. Soon after his nineteenth birthday, he moved into a comfortable flat in Peebles (still in Scotland, near Edinburgh) -- in a small wizarding community known as (the) Crup's Tail. It can be entered through a secret Entrance in High Street, much like Diagon Alley.
Financial Status: Independently, he has an average salary. Just enough to sustain himself.

The Smiths = typical Pureblooded family.. or at least, it started off that way. Aidan Smith is a proud man -- proud of his blood and family status -- and had been bethroed to and married a pureblooded woman. He is prejudiced towards Muggles and Muggleborns, while his wife could care less. The children were given lessons on etiquette and were lectured about pureblood dominance. Aidan brought Zacharias with him to the Ministry of Magic building in hopes of wanting to work with him there. However, Zacharias has a stronger bond with his sister than with the rest of the family. Whenever Aidan was away at work, Jemima would shower him with attention and bathe him in happiness. Both have shown promise of manipulating magic when they were past their toddler years, relieving their parents of the worries of having Squibs for children.

History from student days at Hogwarts to the present time

And the Sorting Hat announced to the student body of Hogwarts, "HUFFLEPUFF!"

It was enough to even throw Zacharias himself off. He eyed the cheering colors of yellow and black as if they were aliens from another world, and had joined them reluctantly. Well, almost reluctantly. At least his sister was there, and things didn't seem to matter anymore. His father still remained his haughty self, because all he cared about was his children's untainted blood. Privacy was rather limited, though, because his "housemates" would think that something's wrong with him, or they're nosy. Wonderful. He had been tossed into a bucket of sympathizers. His sarcasm and his snippy attitude eventually gave them the obvious message of wanting to be left alone.

Other than being close to Jemima, he also had the opportunity to spend a little more time with his favorite cousin, Achaius. He was a seventh year Slytherin at the time, and was known as "Ace" by his friends. Achaius was also the one who introduced Zacharias to art and drawing, and perhaps gave him the idea that Gryffindors were moronic fools. Though he was Zacharius's favorite cousin, Jemima's feeling towards him were the opposite of her brother's. She didn't warn Zacharias to distrust him, but she was distant towards the Slytherin. The Hufflepuff's first year proved to be an interesting year, however, despite not being involved with any of the Basilisk incidents and the incompetence of Gilderoy Lockhart.

Soon second year came around, and he was pleased to have a more capable DADA teacher. It was a straightforward year with the exception of Sirius Black running amuck, but he was disappointed to find that Professor Lupin was leaving with only one year of teaching. He could care less if he was a werewolf, which would just make things more interesting for him.

Third year.. Well, he was looking forward to trying out for the Hufflepuff Quidditch team, but then the Triwizard Tournament came along. Jolly good, but it was certainly going to be entertaining to watch schools compete one another. Mad-eye Moody was annoying, but his lessons were interesting. Cedric was doing spectacular as expected... by his fans. Zacharias, being his neutral self, didn't join in with the parade of Cedric Diggory fans. The Hufflepuff Quidditch Captain's death was definitely unexpected, though. His sister has been one of the many people devastated by Diggory's death, and so he spent time trying comfort her. Yes, Zacharias offers comfort.

Zacharias finally tried out for the Huffepuff Quidditch team, and made it in as Chaser in his fourth year. It was the same year the incompetent Dolores Umbridge taught DADA. Upon hearing about the gathering of forming a "club" that involved learning actual defensive spells, it has caught his interest. However, he wasn't exactly impressed by Harry Potter's reluctance. He also questioned him about the exact details of Diggory's death, but the Weasley brothers eventually shut him up. Zacharias was satisfied with the spells he has learned in that club, at least, but was disappointed when they were discovered.

Fifth year was his final year of attending Hogwarts. Aside from being an important year (OWLs), his most humiliating moment occurred on Hogwarts Express (the Bat Bogey Hex incident with Ginny), and he was given the opportunity to commentate the Gryffindor versus Slytherin Quidditch match in a very un-Hufflepuff like fashion. With Dumbledore's death by the end of the school year, Mr. Smith had Zacharias withdrawn from Hogwarts. That was when the Smiths moved from England to Scotland, their homeland. From the summer of 1997 until the end of the war, Zacharias has barely left the house, as well as being taught by hired tutors. He also hasn't heard from Achaius ever since.

He has done well with the following subjects: Arithmancy (A), Charms (E), Defense Against the Dark Arts (O), Herbology (O), Potions (O), and Transfiguration (E). Mr. Smith has cut off his son's Muggle Studies, as he thought the subject to be unimportant. Zacharias thought otherwise, and sought out a small career in the Misuse of Muggle Artifacts Office, at the Ministry of Magic. His father tried to convince his son that he was capable of doing far better, which lead to a heavy argument. Zacharias eventually moved out and went to live on his own in Peebles, Scotland. He was able to attain his desired job, and from there on he continues to learn as much as possible about Muggles. It may seem unlikely of a person of his nature, but he doesn't care what others think.
